BT, with Ofcom's assistance, have produced a 21CN website to keep us all aware of their rollout plans
Enter in your phone number and then make a note on your calendar of just how soon they are coming along with that 'fat pipe'. Don't get your pen out though to scribble a reminder - this is what it says for our area.....

Just in case you can't read that, it says Oct-Dec 2011.

That will make it over 16 years since I first started trying to get a broadband connection here in the UK.

But I digress.....Interestingly, the website says that:
  •  data will be at least as secure as now - so, not very then?
  • "Alternative next-generation networks already operate successfully in the UK and some people are experiencing their benefits. BT's introduction of a new next-generation network on a nationwide scale is a great example of collaboration between the telecoms industry, engineers, technology experts, government and business." Notice the lack of the word - "consumers" and the admission that they are going to be at least several years behind the innovators.
  • "A new generation of faster Internet services will be made possible. You’ll be able to get on with what you want to do without worrying about download speeds." - What about UPLOADS? We are entering the boom time of consumer generated content... and what about usage Limits? Are we going to be stuck on the olde worlde telecoms charging model, instead of finally admitting that bandwidth isn't scarce after all?
  • Phone followed by broadband: Most of the UK - "The switched-on process will start between November 2006 and August 2007. Most of the country will have their phone services switched-on first. If you are also a broadband user, these services will be switched-on at a later date." Not willing to let go of those telephony revenues yet are you guys? Those of us with broadband don't use your phone services as much as we used to do we.....?

  • Broadband followed by phone: Larger cities - "50% of the UK’s broadband users live in our larger cities, so in these areas we will be switching-on broadband services first. Phone services will be switched-on at a later date." Still cherry picking. C'mon, what about the rural areas? What this website is seriously saying is that rural areas - some of whom still don't even have first generation broadband are going to be waiting another 5 years to get an undefined service that possibly will not even compete with what other countries have already today.
