National Work from Home day
ABC supports the idea of encouraging working from home. For many of us the feeling is still .....if only we could.
Friday May 5th 2006 is National Work from Home day. Many ABC members are members precisely because they need to work from home - we support this initiative. However, the advantages cited on the BBC news etc this morning are impossible to enjoy for many of us without a true broadband connection which allows simultaneous transmission and receipt of voice, video and data.
Whilst ABC supports Workwise in raising awareness of the need to work from home for the environmental, economic and social benefits, ABC also asks BT (Workwise's primary corporate partner), industry and government to work towards certain goals in 2006 which will make these benefits accessible, affordable and ubiquitous.
Without true broadband connections that permit video conferencing, upload of documents to your VPN, customers, office etc, as well as many applications which cannot operate without reliable, high speed communications between recipient and sender, staying at home may not be an option for far too many people, whatever the overall negative cost to business, UK Plc, individuals etc.
ABC asks BT, this government, RDAs, public sector and everyone else involved, to consider these issues, urgently, so that all may live, work and play where they choose in the UK:
a) Solving the asymmetry issue so data can be transmitted and received equally
b) Offering connections which many of us are now accustomed to in other countries eg Japan, Hong Kong, Scandinavia etc. High speed broadband means 100Mbps in 2006, not 2Mbps one way.
c) Making the necessary investments in the UK network that takes us beyond copper and PSTN today, not in 2010 or even later and allows a true competitive market place
d) Encouraging mobility of communications so that all users can connect as and when they choose at very high speeds.
